Overview

The ability to study white matter injury non-invasively and over time has tremendous implications for understanding neurodevelopment, neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Various magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques have been developed in the hope of capturing insight into processes such as myelination, demyelination, dysmyelination and remyelination. While advanced MR methods to study white matter offer great promise, interpretation of results are often complicated by biological, biochemical and pathological features of healthy and diseased tissue for which MR characteristics are not clearly defined or even known. The aim of this workshop in bringing basic, clinical and imaging scientists together is to promote learning, encourage discussion and foster collaboration in the imaging of white matter.

Key Outcomes of this workshop will include:

  • Improved interpretation of advanced imaging results based on biological, biochemical and pathological features associated with white matter injury

  • Identification, description and implementation of MR imaging methods used to study white matter injury

  • Determination of the role of MR techniques in the diagnosis and monitoring of the natural history and treatment of white matter affected diseases and disorders
